Anticipating
reactions to the grand jury’s decision about whether or not to indict Wilson,
Dr. Green directed his staff to proactively craft a strategy that will foster
safe schools while also allowing students and adults the ability to express
their feelings and opinions.
“It is imperative we have a
plan and take a proactive approach to ensure the safety of our students and
staff, which is our highest priority,” Dr. Green said. “Knowing
how to respond quickly and efficiently in any situation is critical.”
The action plan developed
includes assigning leadership team members to schools for guidance; preparing
staff to respond in a helpful manner; facilitating constructive conversations
and a means of expression among students about the grand jury’s decision; having
counselors, psychologists and social workers on standby to provide assistance
as needed; and equipping student-leaders to use their talents and insights to
help guide this dialogue.
“Some
students may decide to protest as a result of the decision,” Dr. Green said. “If
students choose to demonstrate, we will encourage them to do so respectfully,
responsibly and peacefully. I see this as an opportunity to turn this terrible
tragedy into a positive growing experience for our students and community.”
